Our Services

The Medical Social Work (MSW) department of the Institute of Mental Health, Singapore works with patients, their caregivers and the community to ensure that their needs are identified in a timely manner and attended to as far as possible. We are trained to assess the psychological and social conditions and needs of our patients and their caregivers and to help them identify relevant resources that can alleviate their identified problems.

Our services include:

  • Casework Management where we assist with
    • Information and referral services
    • Financial/practical assistance and referrals
    • Rehabilitation and job placements
    • Care planning services
    • Social risk assessment for issues like domestic violence and child abuse
  • Counselling Services 
    • Individual counselling to assist patients to cope with their illness and personal difficulties
    • Family and marital counselling to address issues relating to communication and relationship difficulties
  • Family Psychoeducation Programme to educate families on certain illnesses like schizophrenia and depression and coping strategies to care for patients
  • Training and Public Education where we partner our healthcare team to provide educational sessions to our community partners on mental health issues. These sessions can be conducted through seminars, talks or workshops. We also take part in various social services events like the Caregiver Fair and exhibition organised by the Asian Women's Welfare Association (AWWA), where we educate the public about the plight of those suffering from mental illness and share about the services offered by IMH to help them and their caregivers.
  • Caregiver Support to equip and support caregivers in their journey of caring for patients.
